Beaubien, Retired Executive
1934 – 2007
Yankee Co-Founder, David J. Beaubien, 72, died on April 20, 2007, at
the Fisher Home Hospice, Amherst, MA, following a long illness. He was born
September 20, 1934 in Montague, MA, the son of the late Arthur Beaubien
and Helen (Moreau) Beaubien. He attended local schools in Millers Falls
and graduated from Turners Falls High School as President of his Class
of 1952. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1957 with
a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering and a faculty position as
an Instructor in that field. He formed Cambridge Systems, Inc. in 1959,
a manufacturer of meteorological instruments now used throughout the
world. His professional papers in the field of instrumentation are
widely published in scientific journals. Joining EG&G, Inc. in 1967, he
directed that company’s mergers and acquisition program, retiring in
1990 as senior vice president after 23 years of service. Following
retirement from EG&G, he founded Yankee Environmental Systems, Inc.,
with his two sons in Turners Falls, MA, serving as Chairman of the
Board. He served as a Trustee of the University of Massachusetts during
the 1970s. He was then appointed to the Board of Regents of Public
Higher Education by Governor Edward King, and served as its Chairman
during the administration of Governor Michael Dukakis. He is a
Distinguished Alumnus of the University and is the founder of the David
J. Beaubien Engineering Scholarship Endowment. He was a Registered
Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and has
served as a director of many public and private companies. He served the
mutual fund boards of such prestigious Wall Street firms as Kidder
Peabody, Paine Webber, and most recently retired from the Board of
Directors of UBS Asset Management after 25 years of service to the
mutual fund industry. In recent years, he lived several years in West
Brookfield, MA and then moved to Ware, MA in 1998, where he and his wife
have resided for the past eight years. He leaves his wife Pamela, his
son Arthur of Montague, MA, his daughter Patricia Dichter and her
husband Bronek, of Sudbury, MA, his son Mark and his wife Wendy of
Montague, MA, and their mother Mary Ann (Robert) Beaubien of Montague, his stepchildren John Holbrook and wife Michelle of Cary,
NC, and Todd Holbrook and wife Elizabeth of Winston-Salem, NC, and nine
beloved grandchildren, his sister Rosalie of Greenfield, and many dear
nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Richard
Beaubien, sisters Patricia and Alice, all of Millers Falls, and his
sister Helen of Danvers/Peabody, MA.
A funeral mass will be held 11AM on Saturday, April 28, at Our Lady of
Peace Catholic Church (formerly St. Mary’s), 90 7th Street, Turners
Falls, MA. Following the service, friends and family are invited to
gather for refreshment and remembrance.
