1. The TSI-440 won't report the time and azimuth after I plug in a "straight through" serial cable and verify all the comm settings are correct. Why?

Initiate a 'T' command on the comm software and set the LAT/LONG and TIME/DATE correctly. Additionally, verify that the PLATFORM HEADING value is set to ZERO.

2. How far should the TPS-3100 or TPC-3000 be placed from nearby objects?

Certainly do not install it under or near trees that might overshadow it. Ideally you want to be 10 diameters away from the nearest tall object, where a diameter is the height. Also, for a TPS-3100, the area should be flat. Avoid siting it near sharp edges or slopes which can bias the results due to wind updrafts.
